The Terme di Caracalla are the largest ruin in Rome you can walk into without a queue, and one of the few with no shade at all. That second fact decides when to go and where to eat afterwards.

What you are actually looking at
A third-century imperial bath complex big enough for sixteen hundred people at a time: hot rooms, cold pools, libraries, gardens. What stands today is brick core — the marble was stripped centuries ago — but the scale is intact, and it is the scale that makes it worth the walk.
In summer it also becomes a stage: the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma performs there, and the acoustics inside brick walls that high are not an accident.
When to go
Morning, before eleven. There is almost no shade on the site and the brick holds heat all afternoon. In winter the reverse applies — go after lunch, when the light comes in low and the place is empty.
Allow an hour and a half. It is bigger than it looks from the road, and there is nothing to eat or drink inside.
The walk back, and lunch
From the site it is about ten minutes on foot to Viale Aventino, along the edge of the Aventino and past the top of the Circus Maximus. The road is flat and shaded for most of it.
