From May to September Rome moves outside, and the choice of table stops being about the food and starts being about the air. Here is how to pick one that works after sunset.

The hours that matter
Between noon and five in July and August, an outdoor table in Rome is not a pleasure, it is an endurance test. The city knows this: the good outdoor rooms fill from eight in the evening, when the stone starts giving back its heat but the sun is off the tables.
The other window is breakfast. From eight until about eleven the terraces are the best place in the city to be, and almost nobody uses them — most visitors are queueing somewhere by then.
What to look for in an outdoor table
- Shade that is real. An awning over half the tables is not shade, it is a lottery.
- Distance from the traffic. Viale Aventino is wide and green; a table on a two-lane one-way in the centre is a different experience.
- Air movement. Courtyards trap heat. Streets that run toward the river or an open space, like the Circus Maximus, move air after sunset.
- A kitchen that stays open. Eating outdoors in Rome means eating late. Check the closing time before you sit down.
What to order when it is 35 degrees
Not a bone-in steak at two in the afternoon. In the heat the sensible order is something cold to start, something grilled and simple after, and wine kept properly. Our breakfast menu runs from 8am for the early hours, the aperitivo from 6 to 7.30pm, and the grill after that.
Pizza works outdoors better than most things, because it arrives fast and does not sit. We make it on three different doughs, in the evening only.

Our dehors, and when to come
We are on Viale Aventino 32, on the wide side of the street, two hundred metres from the Circus Maximus and a few minutes from the Terme di Caracalla. The outdoor tables run all day, from breakfast at eight until the bar closes at one in the morning.

Frequently asked questions
When is it too hot to eat outdoors in Rome?
Between roughly noon and 5pm from June to early September. Locals do not do it, and neither should you. The evening is the point.
Do restaurants in Rome stay open in August?
Many close for two or three weeks around Ferragosto, 15 August. We stay open the whole month, including the public holiday itself.
Are outdoor tables more expensive?
Not on the menu. Some places in the centre apply a higher coperto outdoors; ours is €2 per person, inside or out.
Is there anything to see near your outdoor tables?
The Circus Maximus is two hundred metres away, the Terme di Caracalla about a ten-minute walk, and the Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventino is the best sunset in Rome.
Can I sit outside just for a drink?
Yes. Aperitivo runs from 6 to 7.30pm and the bar keeps serving until 1am, 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
