- Is there a fixed menu? On 14 February, usually yes. Ask what is on it and whether wine is included.
- How many sittings? Two sittings means you have a time limit. One sitting means the evening is yours.
- Where is the table? A quiet corner is worth asking for and costs nothing.
- What time does the kitchen close? It decides whether dessert is relaxed or rushed.
The case for the second sitting
If a restaurant runs two services, the second is almost always better: the kitchen has found its rhythm, the room is warm, and nobody is waiting for your table. The first sitting suits people who want to be somewhere else afterwards.
Romans eat late anyway. A 9.30pm table on 14 February is normal, not late.
