What a laurea dinner actually is
Italian degrees end with a public discussion of the thesis in front of a commission, followed by the mark being read out. It happens during the day, often at short notice, and the family travels for it.
So the dinner that follows is not a party among friends: it is grandparents and supervisors and a cousin who drove three hours, all at one table. The room has to work for a ninety-year-old and a twenty-three-year-old at the same time.
What that means for the booking
- Timing is uncertain. Sessions run late. Book with a margin and tell the restaurant the time may move.
- Mixed ages. Not too loud, not too dark, and somewhere the older guests can hear.
- One bill. Usually paid by the family. Agree the price per head first.
- Space for the ritual. Speeches, a cake, photographs. It needs a corner that is not a corridor.
