What actually happens in the city on 24, 25 and 26 December
Christmas Eve is a working evening for restaurants and a busy one — Romans eat out before the family lunch. Christmas Day itself is the opposite: the city goes quiet, most kitchens are shut, and the few that open run a single sitting at lunch.
Santo Stefano, 26 December, is a public holiday too and feels like a Sunday. Museums and the Vatican keep their own calendar, so check before you plan a day around them.
Why booking is not optional
The arithmetic is simple: fewer open kitchens, the same number of people. A table for four on 25 December booked in mid-December is already difficult; booked on 23 December it is luck.
If you are travelling with a group, say the number when you book rather than when you arrive. Holiday services usually run on a fixed menu and a fixed room, and the size decides where you sit.

Frequently asked questions
Are restaurants open in Rome on Christmas Day?
A minority. Most close so the staff can eat with their families. The ones that open usually serve a single fixed-menu lunch and are fully booked well in advance.
Is Christmas Eve dinner a thing in Italy?
Yes, and in Rome it is traditionally fish. Restaurants are busy that evening, often busier than the 25th.
How far ahead should I book?
For 25 December, several weeks. For 24 and 26 December, ten days is usually enough outside the very centre.

Is public transport running on 25 December?
Reduced. Metro line B runs a holiday timetable and buses are thinner. The Circo Massimo stop is a four-minute walk from us, but check the last departure if you are travelling out.
