New Year’s Eve in Rome is two separate decisions: where you eat, and where you are standing at midnight. They are rarely the same place, and the second one determines the first.

The shape of the evening
Dinner starts late — 9pm at the earliest, often 9.30 — and is built to end around 11.30 so that everyone can get somewhere for midnight. That is why restaurants run a fixed menu on 31 December: it is the only way to move a full room through five courses on a schedule.
Expect a set price per head, and expect it to be higher than a normal evening. It normally includes the wine and something sparkling at midnight.
Where people go at midnight
The city puts on a free concert at the Circus Maximus, which is two hundred metres from our door and is the reason this end of the Aventino is busy that night. Fireworks are visible from a wide area around it.
If you would rather not be in a crowd of that size, the streets above the Circus Maximus and the Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventino give you the same sky with a fraction of the people.
Practical things that go wrong
- Transport. Metro B runs late on the 31st but the stations near the concert can close for crowd control. Walk if you can.
- Timing. A restaurant that seats you at 10.30pm cannot get you to midnight anywhere else. Ask what time dinner ends when you book.
- Payment. New Year menus are usually prepaid or held with a card. That is normal, not a red flag.
- After. Almost nothing serves food after 1am. Eat properly at dinner.

The bar keeps going after dinner service. On 31 December it is worth calling ahead, because the room is committed to the dinner sitting until late.
